Key Facts about Romance Scams

Are you trying to avoid online scams? If so then one of the main ones you should watch out for is romance scams. However, it all starts with knowing what they’re about, so you’ll be on the right track to avoid them. Here are some key facts to know about:

1. They show strong emotions quickly
Does love at first sight exist? There’s some debate about that issue, but as a general rule, it takes some time for people to fall in love. So it could be a sign that you’re dealing with romance scams if the person seems to fall in love faster than usual.

This can make the situation tough. Your mind might tell you that it’s not logical to fall in love with someone you don’t know and have never met in real life. On the other hand, when emotions are involved it can be quite tough to do that. In that case, it’s very likely that your emotions rather than your logic will make decisions for you.

2. They sometimes use fake profiles
In fact, it’s quite common for people running romance scams to create a fake profile. They’ll often add a fake photo to their profile that could be a model or other person.

It’s always a good idea to do some checks to determine whether or not the picture is likely real or fake. For example, does the picture match the person’s description regarding their physical feature? Does their chronological age match their biological age? These are important questions.

Another step you can take to try and catch romance scams is to do an online search for the person’s name. If their name doesn’t match the picture in their profile, then it’s a red flag. It’s an even bigger one if you can’t even find the name. There could be a reasonable explanation. However, it’s highly likely that the person is running a scam so you should be cautious.

3. They often start on certain sites
This is important to keep in mind if you want to avoid romance scams. These scams are also known as “dating” scams. So it’s not surprising that they often take place on online dating websites. Sometimes they also involve various social media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and others. Sometimes they’re even done over the phone.

If you use social networks or dating sites, you should watch out for scammers who try and run these scams. The reason is they often target people who would be more willing to fall for the trickery.

4. They often ask for money or gifts
Again, this is something that is sometimes done in real relationships. However, there are a few issues when dating scams are involved. They often ask for the gifts/money very quickly. This is the sort of thing that a so-called “gold digger” would likely do.

However, the situation is worse when dealing with scams of the heart. The reason is that they’re not just asking for money but instead doing it with ill intentions.

These are some of the most important facts about romance scams you should know about to avoid them.
