Are you worried about scams? There are many to
watch out for including ones caused by romance scammers. Before learning about romance/dating scams,
it’s important to know what the scammers themselves are up to.
These scammers are involved in what’s known as a
“confidence” scheme. In other words, they gain their victim’s confidence before
they try to steal their money, identity, or both. In the past people who ran
scams were known as a “confidence man,”
which eventually became known as a “con man.”
Today romance scammers continue the infamous
tradition of tricking people. Many of the people involved are in regions such
as Eastern Europe and Western Africa, although there are dating scams taking
place throughout the world. In fact, the scam
is becoming more popular and is one of
the most common ones today.
You might be surprised to learn that these aren’t
just broke people who want to scam a “sugar daddy.” In fact, these scams are
sometimes big business in some countries and
many ways are run via large businesses
like a legitimate would be.
The way romance scammers run their scams can vary, but they often include the same
components. For example, the scams often occur through social media platforms
or dating services. Anyone looking for love through such sources could, in theory, become a victim to the
schemes of scammers. So it’s important to know what to look for and how the
process works.
When this type of scam is run, one of the main features is that the person moves very
quickly. For example, they often tell the target that they’ve fallen in love
with them. Another thing they try to do quickly is to move the conversation
from the public platform to private email, Instant Messenger, etc. The romance
scammers also might ask you to send money or gifts soon after you meet them.
This isn’t to
say that when someone does those things quickly,
they’re trying to run a scam. However, it’s certainly more likely if they are doing more than one of them soon after
meeting you. Relationships usually take a while to develop so there can be some
question marks if your “lover” quickly asks you to give them all your money or
expensive gifts.
The big problem is
that the romance scammers might try to get access to various financial
accounts of yours. That includes a bank,
credit card, debit, e-wallet, and others. Once they get your pin number, you’re very vulnerable since they could
technically wipe out your entire account. That’s likely a situation you’ll want
to avoid, so it’s important to take steps
to avoid it.
The other major scam run by the scammers is
identity theft. This can be worse because
they can access things such as your social security account and passport. In
some ways, this situation is even worse
than stealing money because in a sense they’re stealing who you are regarding your legal status.
Fortunately,
there are various sources to protect yourself from scammers. They include
various tools and tools you can take.
These are some important facts to know about romance
scammers so you can protect yourself.
